Position Description for Director of Youth Ministries

Mission Statement:  

The mission of the Stewartstown United Methodist Church (SUMC) is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by helping people reach up, reach in and reach out.

Qualifications:

As a minimum, a director of youth ministries needs to demonstrate the following:

·         A personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord as well as a strong desire to serve within the church;

·         A sense of calling to youth ministry;

·         Ability to work with youth and young adults;

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

·         Ability to plan, organize, lead, and guide complex projects and spontaneous activities related to youth ministries;

·         Competence in basic lay counseling and listening skills appropriate for youth ministry

·         Willingness to work cooperatively with others, to maintain a positive outlook and disposition, and to be flexible in solving problems;

·         The ability to protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality.  Refraining from indiscriminately sharing personal information is critical.  Discretion must be exercised when dealing with the public, youth and their parents, and the church’s leaders and members;

·         Weekly attendance at worship and Sunday School at SUMC is expected;

·         Completion of college-level or higher course work in Christian Education and/or Youth Ministry, and/or comparable experience is desired.

In addition this position requires:

·         Satisfactory Security Check;

·         Complete Safe Sanctuary Training;

·         A minimum age of 23 to comply with the SUMC Safe Sanctuaries policy.

Position Summary:

The Director of Youth Ministries leads a Christian ministry to the youth of the Stewartstown area that fosters faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and equips youth to be in ministry to other youth.
 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1.       Planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating, and selecting and providing resources for the church’s ministry to youth;

2.       Build relationships of integrity with youth that become the basis of meeting needs, sharing Christ, and involving youth in peer ministry with other youth;

3.       Coordinate all aspects of the Middle School and High School age Sunday School classes, including working with the Sunday School Coordinator to recruit leadership, and ensuring there is a time of study of scripture or principles derived from scripture (various material and age appropriate styles of presentation are encouraged) and that youth are encouraged to participate in various outreaches, ministry opportunities, etc.;

4.       Coordinate all aspects of the 6-12 Grade Youth Group, ensuring there is opportunity to develop fellowship, spiritual formation, discipleship and the experiencing of Christian community.  Various material and age appropriate styles of presentation are encouraged.  Opportunity should also be given for youth to plan mission responses, witness events, fellowship experiences and trips as well as other recreational activities;

5.       Enlist adult and youth to participate in a Youth Council to deal with concerns and views of the Sunday School Class and Youth Group.

6.       Meet with the Youth Council periodically to schedule, plan, and carry out all youth ministry activities.  This includes delegating appropriate responsibilities to members of the Youth Council and other youth workers to carry out parts of those plans.

7.       Plan outings for youth in keeping with the guidelines in the SUMC Youth Ministry Handbook;

8.       Be responsible for securing all necessary funds, travel arrangements, leadership, adult chaperones, and providing Christian teaching, times for worship, prayer and scripture study throughout youth trips, retreats, and mission/work camp experiences;

9.       Plan for an August or September youth kick off event for youth ministry;

10.   Develop relationships and maintain regular communication with parents of participating youth;

11.   Coordinate roles and responsibilities of volunteer leaders of the Sunday School Class and Youth Group.  Provide support, encouragement, Christian community and spiritual nurture for volunteer youth workers through leadership retreats and regular prayer/support meetings.

12.   Help volunteer youth workers develop mentoring relationships with youth and provide training aimed at leadership and faith development among the youth.

13.   Work cooperatively with the production staff of summer theatre, and offer full fall programs and activities for youth that provide a constructive outlet for supervised activities and continuing encouragement to the youth in their walk with Christ;

14.   Other duties as directed by the Senior Pastor.


Administrative Responsibilities:

1.       Attend regularly and specially called staff meetings and retreats, as able;

2.       Attend church council, Charge Conference and other meetings as needed or requested;

3.       Prepare, submit, and administer a youth budget and annual goals for the church fiscal year in consultation with the Youth Council, ministerial staff and Committee on Finance, and submit to the Church Council or Charge Conference;

4.       Prepare and submit an annual summary report of the mission, goals, plans and successes in youth ministry to the Charge Conference, and periodic summary reports to the Church Council as requested;

5.       Conduct the ministry in compliance with the SUMC Safe Sanctuary policies.


Staff Relationships:

1.        The Director of Youth Ministries is hired by the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and reports to the SPRC through a liaison.

2.        The Director of Youth Ministries shall perform the above responsibilities under the direction and supervision of the Senior Pastor, complying with guidelines in the SUMC Employee Handbook and other employee policies that may be adopted.

3.        The Director of Youth Ministries shall meet with the Senior Pastor for clarification of the vision for this ministry, strategic planning, and for guidance, prayer and support. (This may also be done through phone contacts and email.)

4.        The Director of Youth Ministries shall be evaluated annually by the Senior Pastor, with input from the SPRC liaison. (Questions or problems related to the job should be first discussed with the Senior Pastor.)

5.        The SPRC will also be available to provide support and hear concerns.


Salary Grade:
 

As recommended by the SPRC and established by the annual Charge Conference or Church Council.  Quarter-time salaried position.  Minimum hours per week: 10  (Salary for 2010: $3,822)


Terms of Continuing Employment:

  1. Continuing employment is subject to satisfactory job performance as determined by the SPRC and continued funding.
  2. This position of employment is “at will” as defined in the SUMC Personnel Policies and Procedures Handbook.   As such it may be ended by either party, at any time, for any reason or for no stated reason.


Records and Materials:

1.        The Employee agrees that all materials, resources, and computer programs purchased by the Employer as well as all records, print or electronic data, pertaining to the work of the Director of Youth Ministries’ position are property of Stewartstown United Methodist Church.

2.        The Employee agrees that all equipment provided by Stewartstown United Methodist Church remains property of SUMC.
